Don’t look book

Book Design

Context

I created a book on the theme 'Don't Look' for a crowdfunding campaign with my classmates. I designed two double-page spreads and some rewards.

My concept 1

I wanted to create a page that incorporates Japanese language into the design. Inspired by the bold and iconic look of construction warning signs, I developed a visual that communicates “Do Not Look” using signage styles familiar in both Japan and Australia. The design plays with cultural symbols of caution, blending them in a graphic and attention-grabbing way.

My concept 2

When I heard the phrase “Don’t look,” the first image that came to mind was the Japanese proverb “See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil.” Building on that idea, I created a concept featuring aliens striking poses that mirror this proverb. The twist: the alien who failed to cover its eyes disappears

Don’t Look. I Know It’s Hard.

Imperfections. Mess. Politics. Injustice. Vulnerability. Violence. Behind the curtain. How the sausage gets made. When our attention is pulled in so many directions at once, what happens when we pay attention to the things we’re told we shouldn’t see?

Throughout this book, we’re exploring what we don’t look at, what we do – and who is looking at us. We’re unpacking what it means to be told to look at one thing and not another, and who is doing the telling. Our contributors have explored themes like surveillance, privacy, bodies, forgotten spaces, overlooked details, decay, politics, sustainability, climate change, and what it means to look the other way in the face of injustice. Immerse yourself in a perfect-bound, full colour, A4 book that combines all aspects of photography, illustration, collage, typography, and artistry.

We are a diverse collective of local and international Graphic Design students based in Brunswick, Naarm/Melbourne. Each student’s design reveals a unique perspective on the theme ‘Don’t Look.’
